The work of Lillian Bassman (1917 - 2012) impresses with its incredible elegance and stylistic confidence. As art director at Harper's Bazaar for many years, she had a decisive influence on magazine layout and fashion photography from the 1940s to the 1960s. By constantly experimenting with new photographic techniques, she brought an unmistakable painterly feel to her black and white images.

The work of Paul Himmel (1914 - 2009) is also characterized by a great love of experimentation. He worked for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and many other magazines. His photographs of the New York City Ballet from the 1950s, which captured movement not in still images but in blurred motion studies, made photographic history.
